Women in Horror

Mirror Mirror

Through characters played by Sarah Michelle Gellar in 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' or Scarlett Johansson in the 'Avengers', Joss Whedon is helping open the gates for strong independent female characters.

In a similar vein (though in no way are we trying to compare Joss's amazing writing skills to ourselves), we're approaching serial killers in films a little differently. Our killer is a woman, and she kicks some ass.

We want to flip the conventional male serial killer's victim pattern. Does she choose her victims? Yes, and very carefully, but she won't pick you because you're blonde with blue eyes, or because you remind her of her serious mother issues. She'll pick you because, well, you probably annoy the piss out of her and the general public.

The point is, she's really good at what she does and we're proud of that.

The horror genre is definitely seeing some amazing leadership from women in recent history. Jessica Cameron, the Soska Twins, who are all Canadian too, are very inspiring. Not only are they at the helm of some great projects, but they are putting some very strong females in front of the camera as well.

We were fortunate enough to meet Jessica Cameron and hear her passion for the film industry and her incredible drive to push boundaries. I really admire Jessica's commitment. I hope to be there someday.

Here is Jessica's response during an interview with Dread Central. She was asked about the challenges she faces as a woman filmmaker.

JC: I think it would be a shorter list to name the things that are NOT a challenge. Honestly, it’s tough. Every room I walk into, I have to prove that I deserve to be there as much as the male counterparts. So many still in our genre don’t want to take women seriously. I have even had other directors and producers assume that I could not possibly be a real horror fan, to the point that they have quizzed me! (Yes, I pass every time, silly boys.)

We still have a ways to go, but things are definitely looking better than before. Especially with some amazing and passionate people leading the way.
